Daytime Anchorage |
| Description |
False Nara is a small bay that formed by the point containing Nara Inlet and a smaller one just to the West. The enclosed area of the bay is a coral and sediment formed shelf, with a coral fringe at the edge of the deep water. A reef protection marker shows the coral edge at the East, but the fringe extends well out from the western point.
Rarely available due to the SE trade winds, False Nara can be useful as a snorkel location in Northlies, mindful of the tide compression delivering a small swell to the anchorage, which is more troubling to monohulls than cats.
Regardless, the vista is very pleasant, two public moorings are available and the coral in the range of bordering on excellent. From the eastern corner of the SW fringe, their are numerous bommies decorated in 80% coverage of colour and even feature some black ferns. Toward the mid point, several bommies are made of the one hard type of coral creating imposing forms dropping into the depths. Amongst the valleys and overhangs, are schooling fish of several varieties. While not as enthusiastic as the "trained" fish at Blue Pearl and Mantaray, they are reasonable approachable.
The underwater features continue along to the Eastern end. A proper investigation in the right conditions could entice a stay in the water for upwards of 1/2 an hour. |
