Club Outrigger Whitsunday, a club in the North Queensland Zone of the Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association (AOCRA) are holding Round 3 of the North Queensland Grand Prix in the Whitsundays on Saturday 5 May and Sunday May 6.
The regatta will see 300 competitors across 20 races making it the largest regatta in history for the North Queensland Zone and 2018 season with teams as far south as Coffs Harbour and Mooloolaba to Port Douglas in the north.
Saturdays marathon will be an inaugural event with 24 outrigger canoes vying for first place as they race from Shute Harbour to Boathouse Beach in Airlie Beach, covering a distance of 20km while Sunday will see a series of races from 8km marathons to 500m sprints.
Club Outrigger Whitsunday Vice President and Director of Cumberland Charter Yachts, Terry Kemp said to hold these events in the Whitsundays was an exciting time for the club, North Queensland Zone and was looking forward to seeing more larger events in the region being held in the future.
In support of the event, Cumberland Charter Yachts are providing in-kind support of one their bareboats as the start boat for each race thanks to the owner of 'Charisma', Paul Fellows.
"We needed a start boat and I thought, hang on, I know where I can get one of those" said Mr Kemp
"It is with much thanks to Paul for allowing us to use his boat and support this wonderful event"
Spectators can take part in the regatta by going to Boathouse Beach at the Port of Airlie and cheering in the competitors as they cross the finish line between 1500 and 1600 on Saturday and 0630 and 1530 on Sunday.
