Cumberland Crew set sail for Sydney Hobart 2015 race!! 2:18pm, Fri 23 Oct 2015
For 70 years the Rolex Sydney Hobart has captured the imagination of a nation and raised the heart rate of sailors from around the world! Greg Tobin and Charlie Preen are two such sailors. Both have been shareholders of Cumberland Charter Yachts since 2000.
Vessel: "After Midnight" is a Farr 40- (40 foot single hull racer/cruiser). Greg has entered her in the IRC ORCi Divisions, (International Rule Club and Offshore Racing Council)
After having competed in both Airlie Beach Race Week 2015 and Hamilton Island Race Week 2015, "After Midnight" leaves the sheltered waters of the Whitsundays to head for Sydney in preparation for the Boxing Day start.
With just 60 days to go until the race start, we spoke with Greg and Charlie about their preparations for 2015.
How many Sydney Hobarts' have you done?
Greg "5 - this will be our 6th, 2nd time on After Midnight, 3rd time with Charlie as we raced Dehler Magic back in 2007."
Charlie "2 (3rd this year) Dehler Magic placed in the performance handicap with line honours in our division."
What's your favourite part of the Sydney Hobart?
Charlie "the start and finish"
How long have you and Charlie sailed together?
Greg "25 years - we have owned 3 boats together over the years."
Charlie "Its been a great relationship!"
After placing 4th last year what results are you hoping for this year?
Greg "Would be great to beat that and get a spot on the podium, that would be nice, but really we are happy to finish."
How long will it take to get the boat down to Sydney?
Greg "We aim to be there early November, so we can start preparing the boat. It's a team effort to get the boat to Sydney, the regular weekend crew will all assist in delivery as well."
How many crew on board this year?
"We have 9 crew from QLD and NSW this year. Airlie, Mackay, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Sydney"
What wind strengths are most favourable for After Midnight?
Greg "Strong Northerly 25 - 35 knots"
Charlie (jokes) "I prefer 10 - 15 knots"
What do you have planned for your arrival at Constitution Dock?
Greg "After 3 days with no sleep - a beer at Customs house and fall asleep at the table, and maybe tuck into a curried scallop pie?"
Charlie "Have a beer or 3 and hope Betty (wife) arrives in time to rescue me"
