Chartered: 20 Jun 2010

A plaque at Blue Pearl bears a William Shedd quote A ship is safe in harbor, but that's not what ships are for.  The forecast for our charter was the same every day: strong SSE wind warning, isolated showers, swell and seas to 3m. We could have stayed in safe harbour, but inspired by this, we took Serendipity as far and wide as she could in these conditions.

The nature and appeal of area is the good protection found from every wind direction, and we enjoyed calm nights in the eastern anchorages on Hook and Whitsunday Islands. The best time to sail was in the morning when the winds were lighter. Heading northwards with the wind and sea behind us we surfed along; southwards had us ploughing into the waves with spray flying.

Of the beautiful bays for snorkelling,  Stonehaven, Butterfly and Blue Pearl were best. The water was clear and among the bright coral we saw an amazing array of fish, squid, rays and turtles.  On leaving Butterfly Bay, we were entertained by mother whale and calf 50 metres off the entrance.

When not swimming we enjoyed fossicking on the beaches. Our walking party was brought to a halt by a 2 metre python making its way across the walk trail from Sawmill Beach to Jones Point wisely, we waited patiently until it lazily moved off into the morning chill.  We appreciated the warm comfort of sleeping on board rather than camping on the island!

Serendipity earned its name revealing delights in water and on land at each island we visited Hook, Hayman, Whitsunday, South Molle, Double Cone and finally tranquil Woodwark Bay. We handed the yacht back on the last day in perfect sunshine on an almost windless day. Our charter in the Whitsundays three year earlier has been frustrated with too little wind.  This holiday was in contrast blustery as we stepped ashore on wobbly sea legs we pondered that this shouldnt have been a great holiday.  And yet it was. And immediately started planning the next charter.
