As a sailing family, with children aged 6 and 8, from the South West of England we were a long way from home and a little nervous before our first chartering experience, especially as my Australian cousin was also joining us... However Tony our Sail Guide reassured us with a comprehensive 3 hr briefing and before we knew it he was off and we were heading for our 1st anchorage. We all fell hook, line & sinker for Lazyitis - our well presented & equipped sailing vessel!
The Whitsundays were our adventure playground for the next week and we were in awe. It was also a real life aquarium- by day 2 we had watched (and heard!) a hump backed whale breach and play as well as seeing many turtles (often heard gasping for breath like old men). Later in the week we added manta ray, dolphins and the Maori Wrasse to our list. In fact we got picky about snorkelling and would only go to 'gold ringed' spots as directed by our 8 yr old son! We would thoroughly recommend hiring a coral board for younger children - our 6 yr old daughter was not confident enough at snorkelling but loved spotting fish and coral whilst being propelled about by a snorkelling adult.
It was a delight to find deserted beaches, and even an anchorage to ourselves one night - Esk Island was our favourite spot with its beautiful coral & shell beach promontory. The work of the Marine National Park in preserving the Whitsundays - a piece of paradise - with conservation areas, mooring buoys and so on is impressive.
The ease of chartering -  thank you CCY! - and beauty of the Whitsundays made this week the highlight of our 6 weeks travelling in Australia & New Zealand. My memories of this area as a backpacker 14 yrs ago had served me well ... it was even better this time.

PS We never found the butter in our provisioning and the genoa was a little on the small side but such trivial matters pale into insignificance as I relive our week through the many photos...
