For years I looked out of the kitchen window at yachts sailing. Dont you wish you were out there? was my standard question to my children, No, you wish we were out there, we like watching television was the standard reply.
While sailing in Tonga in 2009 I realised the coral and fish life was disappearing and I had to take my kids to where it was still alive and protected, the Whitsundays.
With suited three of the four children and a nephew we found our lost luggage and made a mad dash to Stonehaven where  the rookie crew made a perfect job of anchoring.....perhaps no experience leads to better following of instructions!!
On a mooring in the morning  we snorkelled from the boat, amidst amazed cries of glee as heads popped up around the reef.  With a certain amount of reluctance and disbelief I got them back on board to head round the corner into Butterfly Bay with the assurance it was even better.
They had to admit yet again mother was right, and the coral and the sea life is the best we have seen inworld travels. With a storm was on its way and a day to see the sights on the eastern side  we headed for more amazing  snorkelling  at Border Island then on the most beautiful beach in the world - Whitehaven. The sand is so white and crunchy underfoot, and the beach is so enormous yours can be the only footprints you see. After a safe and secure night in the calm of Macona  Inlet as the winds raged outside, we listened to various radio schedules  where  charterers were told their plans could be lumpy or character building. With a berth at  Hamilton Island we were off for cocktails and ice cream. Could be lumpy of course has now become a family joke for anything difficult.
Lesson learned: You dont have to be a boating enthusiast, if you like the water you will have the time of your life on your floating caravan AND Do it now, if the ecological doomsayers are right,  keep on coming, aither way you see a wonder of the world.
