My sailing mad husband had said for years hed love to charter a yacht and sail around islands with the family. So on the year of his 50th birthday I got on-line to check out what was available. The CCY website was the most comprehensive and got me hooked straight away. As we were in NZ and clueless of the Whitsunday area it was a dream to use the CCY site to find out everything we needed to know right down to booking the mooring and restaurant to celebrate the 50th birthday in style.
It was presented to hubby as a done deal with all the kids/their partners and grandpa coming along, 8 in total.
We met Sue and her friendly staff at Airlie Beach where we picked up On the Double and were extremely impressed by their service and knowledge.
We spent the first night there and explored the lovely little town. Next morning we had our final briefing and our provisions arrived. It looked like enough to feed an army and, we certainly did eat well, the portions were massive.
Our first night at sea was Halloween and pirate outfits were worn by all, which made for a good night and some hilarious photos.
Waking up to the lapping of the water against the boat gave it a real desert island holiday feeling, the beautiful bays and misted mountains a pleasure to behold.
The sea life from the friendly, grumpy-faced Maori Wrasse in Manta Ray Bay to the beautiful turtles in Tongue Bay, and the pure white silica sand and crystal clear turquoise waters of Whitehaven Beach made the experience truly memorable.
The family dressed in their stinger suits looking like the crew of the Starship Enterprise was the best laugh I had all year.
The bushwalks and climbs, one to the aboriginal cave in Nara Inlet with drawings around 9000 years old, and a rainy forest walk in Sawmill Bay, were good breaks between the sailing and for non-sailors like me, the odd day at the resorts was a welcome change.
Just the right balance of relaxation and plenty to do a real break from the rat race.
