Lets sit right back and youll hear a tale...

Cheeky friends were singing the theme song from Gilligans Island before we left.  We were inexperienced and did feel foolish!

We needed a good, easy, satisfying holiday so trawled the net for what was available in the Whitsundays (we heard that a sailing trip here was unequalled).   Several of my cousins had sailed with Cumberland Yacht Charters and continued to come back.  They said they were the best.  Who knew!?

Cumberland seemed to offer the best prices.  Tempting!  We booked.  Got to the Whitsundays. Arrived at the Cumberland offices and from there were put on a lovely picturesque conveyor belt.  Briefing to boat, boat to ropes, ropes to water, water to the islands. I was surprised.  Surprised by how well equipped and maintained the boat was, by the lovely staff, by the weather,  water, and how close the islands.  The whole holiday turned out to be one tasty surprise.  For us, it was a strangely concentrated experience, a like a fantasy wonderland of water, a crazy variety of coral and tropical fish, so many huge whales (one within 30 metres of our boat), dolphins, turtles, gorgeous inlets, cracker sunsets, superbly tranquil seas (on some exquisite days), beaches, great landlubber walks, eagles, owls......even the resorts turned out to be a sparkly side trip.

My suggestions: head for the snorkel spots at the top of Hook Island and Cateran Bay on sunny days.  Dont go around The Pinnacles in wind against tide conditions (we were warned).  Do go to Hook Island Resort for a laugh.  Do dinghy down Gulnare Island.  Dont go on a low tide and get stuck.  Do go through Solway Pass with your motor on, no matter how much the overconfident landlubber says to hoist the sails in the middle of the maneoveur.  Go.

The team anticipated every pocket of possible pleasure and steered us in that direction.  It did make for a seamless holiday and could easily have ended with a man overboard.  Thank you
