A beautiful 43 foot Beneteau.

30 knot gusty winds.

Rain whipped faces.

Big smiles and awesome memories.

Christmas 2010 in the Whitsunday!

There were turtles almost the size of me and staggering views to take in. We cruised in our tender as we made like pioneers and conquered private beaches and secret coves. We snorkeled amidst brilliantly colourful corals, attempted to keep up with playful, shimmering, rainbow fish and peered at electric blue lipped clams which kept us infinitely fascinated.

Our yacht, Olivetta, sped us craftily around countless islands under full sail and kept us safe during the stormy weather. We manoeuvred to avoid reefs, rocks and anchor drag as we moored overnight wherever we fancied and with adequate protection. Our map, tide chart and copy of One Hundred Magic Miles became our holy trinity for the eight days we spent aboard.

It was not the relaxing, sun drenched, white sand, crystal water holiday I imagined it to be. It was better! It included hard core sailing, a nail biting crossing of the passage, concentration and focus as to itinerary dependent on weather and ocean conditions, scrutiny and pace under pressure to avoid reefs and land with little visibility and a huge faith in our depth sounder and GPS.

CCY were amazingly thorough in their service and we felt in very capable hands. The guidance and local knowledge we had access to provided for the very best places to visit allowing for the conditions. Our entire experience from pre trip planning to induction to radio check ins and advice all the way to our debrief and after sales service was an absolute pleasure. Everything was thought of and extremely easy!

I learnt so much about sailing in just over a week and am counting the days until our next voyage. After gaining a little more experience and enjoying the Whitsundays at their sunny best, we intend to sail through the Caribbean and along the Mediterranean.

Pack your snorkel, who is coming?!
