Many thanks to Cumberland for a great holiday.
Meg and I had booked Lazyitis for a milestone-birthday cruise, but we were upgraded to the very beautiful Olivetta. What a sensational yacht we loved it; luxuriously equipped and very comfortable, with ample fresh water and fridge space (and two wine lockers!). The forward cabin with ensuite won us over but the starboard quarter cabin was a close second, being that much closer to the superb shower in the aft bathroom.
The weather settled down beautifully, giving us day after day of perfect 1015kt south-easterlies. We managed some very enjoyable off-the-wind sailing around Whitsunday Island and further south. The memory of a beautiful square run goose-winged along Whitsunday Passage from the southern end of Dent Island to Cid Harbour will stay with us for a long while... Shes very well set up for short-handed sailing.
We spent a lot of time on the northern end of Hook Island, enjoying great snorkelling. Plenty of big fish, giant clams, and wonderful coral. We even surprised a turtle underwater at the Pinnacles -- he stopped having lunch, gave us a concerned look, and then paddled off for a bit of peace and quiet.
We ticked lots of the walk-ashore boxes too, visiting the look-out above Whitehaven, splashing around in the waterfall at the head of Nara Inlet, and walking from Sawmill Beach around to Dugong at Cid Harbour nearly stepping on a goanna who reckoned he owned the place.
The recommended anchorages worked fine although we only managed one night completely on our own, at Maureens Cove. But Cid Harbour and Nara have space for hundreds of boats, so we couldnt grumble. And we had plenty of spectacular sunsets to enjoy from the cockpit.
Cumberland staff were brilliant very professional and helpful throughout -- they made the whole process very easy. Highly recommended.
Well definitely be back!
