Airlie Beach is more than just a departure point — it's a destination in its own right. Arrive a day or two early, stay on after your charter, and discover why so many guests fall in love with this tropical town.
Nestled between lush national park and the sparkling Coral Sea, Airlie Beach is the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef — and one of Queensland's most vibrant coastal towns.
Most guests arrive in Airlie Beach focused on their charter — and rightly so. But the town rewards those who give it a little extra time. Arrive the day before, stay a night or two after, and you'll discover a place with real character: great food and nightlife, a stunning lagoon, nearby national park walks and a relaxed tropical energy that sets the tone perfectly for a week on the water.
We recommend arriving in Airlie Beach the day before your charter briefing. It takes the pressure off travel delays, gives you time to provision the vessel and settle in — and leaves the evening free to enjoy the town.
The free saltwater lagoon on the Airlie Beach foreshore is one of the best in Queensland — a great way to shake off travel fatigue and get into holiday mode before your charter begins. Stinger-safe and open year-round.
Stock up before you set sail. Whitsundays Provisioning can deliver everything from groceries to gourmet hampers straight to your vessel — order in advance through your Charter Centre. Alternatively the Cannonvale Coles and Airlie Beach Woolworths are just a short drive from the marina.
If you're chartering with a group, the night before departure is a great chance to get everyone together, go over the plan and get excited about the week ahead. Airlie Beach has plenty of great options — from waterfront dining to casual beach bars.
The Airlie Beach town cetnre is a 5-10min walk from the marina along the Bicentennial Boardwalk. Enjoy culinary delights, souvenirs, night clubs, bars, day spa's and much more.
Coral Sea Marina is a great place to spend an evening before your charter. Walk the pontoons, watch the vessels coming and going, grab a meal at Sorrento's or a drink at one of the marina bars — and start getting excited about life on the water.
If you need to pick up sun protection, snorkelling gear, fishing supplies or anything else before you head off, Airlie Beach has a good range of marine and outdoor shops. Better to sort it on land than hunt for it at sea.
Returning your vessel doesn't have to mean the holiday is over. Many guests build in an extra night or two in Airlie Beach to unwind, celebrate and see the parts of the region they didn't get to from the water.
There's a long-standing charter tradition of a big dinner on the night you return. Airlie Beach has great restaurants, bars and live music venues to help you relive the best moments of the week with your crew.
If there were islands or spots you didn't quite get to on charter, several operators run day trips from Airlie Beach to Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet and the outer reef. A great option if you have a late flight or a spare day.
The Conway National Park sits right behind Airlie Beach and offers a range of walks through tropical rainforest with views back over the town centre. A beautiful way to spend a morning after time on the water.
If your timing is right, the Airlie Beach Farmers Markets on the foreshore are on each Saturday morning from 6am - 1pm are well worth a visit — local produce, crafts, fresh food and a relaxed atmosphere that sums up the Whitsundays lifestyle perfectly.
The main strip of Airlie Beach has a great mix of cafes, boutiques, souvenir shops and beach bars. It's a lively and relaxed place to spend a morning or afternoon — especially with the lagoon, foreshore parklands and stunning views as a backdrop.
Returning guests often lock in their next charter before they fly home — and it's easy to do. Speak to our team at the marina or check availability online while it's all fresh in your mind.
From November to May, marine stingers (jellyfish) are present in Whitsunday waters. The Airlie Beach lagoon is stinger-safe year-round. On charter, stinger suits are available from us and are recommended to wear year round. The risk is manageable — just be aware and prepared.
The Whitsundays is a year-round destination. The dry season (May to October) brings cooler temperatures, steady south-easterly trade winds and clear skies — ideal for sailing. The wet season (November to April) is warmer and more humid with occasional tropical rain, but also quieter and often better value.
Queensland sun is intense — especially on the water. Pack high-SPF sunscreen, a broad-brimmed hat, UV-protective clothing and quality polarised sunglasses. Re-apply sunscreen frequently, particularly on the first day when most people get caught out after a winter at home.
Businesses in Airlie Beach accept credit and debit cards. There are ATMs in Airlie Beach town centre. Hamilton Island is a cashless island accepting only cards for purchases.
Mobile coverage in Airlie Beach and around the main island group is generally good. Coverage becomes patchy in more remote anchorages. Check your service providers coverage map to see what coverage you can get dduring charter.
We strongly recommend adequate travel insurance for all charterers, particularly for charters during the cyclone season (December to April). Insurance should cover cancellation, medical expenses and — ideally — charter-specific cover. Speak to your insurer before booking.
The Whitsundays is easy to reach from anywhere in Australia by air, road or rail. Two airports serve the region and shuttle services connect directly to Coral Sea Marina.
