How this helps

Bareboat suitability is not just about licences or qualifications. It’s about practical boating knowledge, confidence and the kind of support that may help you enjoy your holiday safely.

Understand your starting point

Use the calculator to get a rough sense of how your experience lines up with a bareboat charter.

See where support may help

If you’re a little rusty or light on experience, extra tuition or a Sail Guide may be worth considering.

Start the right conversation

Your result is a guide only. Our team will still help match you with a suitable vessel and support options.

Your pre-departure briefing

On the morning of departure, the two most experienced people in your group will complete a detailed vessel briefing covering practical boat handling and safety.

  • Passage planning and basic navigation
  • Awareness of local hazards
  • Anchoring and mooring practicals
  • Hoisting, tacking and dropping sails if applicable
  • Safe operation of the vessel

This briefing may take up to 4 hours and is an important part of preparing you to operate the boat safely.

If you’d like extra support

If you have some experience but feel a little out of practice, there are ways to ease into your charter with more confidence.

  • Extra tuition from your Briefer for an additional 2 hours
  • A full-time Sail Guide for part or all of your charter
  • Help choosing a vessel that suits your experience level
Good to know: If you choose a full-time Sail Guide, guests will need to provide a private cabin and catering onboard.
