The Whitsundays Farewells the Clipper Yacht Race Fleet 2:51pm, Tue 30 Jan 2018
Over two wonderful weeks (Jan 13 - 29), the Whitsundays played host as the final port to the Round the World Clipper Yacht Race Australian leg. Completing a record-breaking 40,000 nautical mile race around the world, the novice sailors were welcomed with opened arms, a well-deserved break and a 2 week long festival for the crew, their families and locals to enjoy.
The Whitsunday Clipper Race Carnival was organised as a celebration of the crews' visit and also to showcase the wonderful Whitsundays to the world.
Starting with the Bendigo Bank Welcome Party, in which the crews were given the Key to the Whitsundays, the carnival also included the lavish Fish D'Vine White on Whitehaven Long Lunch, on Whitehaven Beach, the exciting Whitsunday Foodservice Progressive Cruise Lunch and a Rodeo by the Reef, in Bowen just to name some of the local events.
The Round the World Clipper Race is the only kind in the world that match experienced skippers with novice sailors and set them off on a round the world race which starts and ends in Liverpool in the UK and visits Uruguay, South Africa, Australia, China, the USA and Ireland.
All of the yachts departed together under sail yesterday headed for their next race in Sanya, China and are due to return to the Whitsundays in 2020 to be the host port for the crew once more. The Round the World Clipper Race Carnival is expected to once again take part in welcoming the 700 crew members into the Whitsundays and showcasing the region.
